Need a Bath Bench?
A bath bench is just one of the ways that you can increase your independence in the bathroom. It is great for elderly, disabled or infirm people. A bath bench allows the nurse or caregiver to settle patient in the bath (on the bench) so that they can wash themselves…
Loss of physical independence can be a heartbreaking situation for all concerned. Bathing is such an important part of daily life and the soothing properties of a warm bath or shower are a great way to offset aches and pains. This makes it even more tragic when bathing alone becomes difficult. Able bodied folk take the ease of bathing for granted, unable to imagine what it must be like not to be able to bath on your own. Getting in and out of a bathtub is no small feat for a disabled person. Decreasing mobility makes it harder and harder to do these things as time passes.
Some of the worst injuries occur in the bath and a bath bench can give peace of mind as well as independence. Buying a bath bench or similar aid can reduce the risk of potentially crippling falls before they happen.
When choosing a bath bench look out for some of the following features:
- Powerful suction cups to keep the bath bench firmly in place
- Check if the bench can support the intended weight.
- The bath bench itself should be easy to move
- A bath bench should drain well on the seat
- A sturdy back for increased comfort and relaxation
Before using a bath bench or shower aid be sure to test it thoroughly before placing elderly or infirm patients on it. Also, install a handheld shower in the bathtub so that the user can wash themselves from the tub without being fully immersed in the water.
Another alternative is a bath transfer bench that slides over the edge of the bath. A mobile shower chair is another great item that can make showering a pleasure again. Use the mobile shower chair to get from the toilet to the shower. A simple round shower stool is a cheaper alternative. Shower chairs are great for small spaces and come with sturdy rubber reinforced grips for safety.
Many other bathroom products can make bath time easier for disabled and elderly people. Making the bathroom safer for disabled or elderly people is not difficult. Han rails are helpful and the bathroom should be generously equipped with several bath rails on the tub, the shower and by the toilet.
Non- disabled caregivers often withstand the worst of the logistical problems that come with bath time or shower time. Many new advances are being made and we can look forward to custom designed bath tubs and showers that are easy to get in and out of. Until then we have to make do with a bath bench.
