Blood Glucose Meter

A blood glucose meter is an extremely important tool used to assess the glucose level in a patients’ blood. Ones’ blood sugar or glucose level determines the amount of glucose or energy flowing through your bloodstream and into the cells of your body. After you have eaten a meal, your glucose levels will be a lot higher than first thing in the morning before eating anything – this is something to keep in mind when taking your glucose level on a blood glucose meal. If your level of blood glucose is not sitting within the usual range for an adult, you should definitely have yourself checked out by a doctor as you may be suffering from hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, which is when your blood sugar is too high or too low respectively.

If you suffer from diabetes mellitus, then a blood glucose meter will definitely be able to help you check on your blood sugar level at regular intervals during the day. This common disease is when your blood sugar level is consistently higher than it should be as a result of a variety of causes. There are many types of sugars in the blood, like glucose, fructose and galactose, but glucose is the only one that is synchronized using glucagons and insulin. While your glucose level can be measured through checking pure blood, plasma or even serum, today most blood glucose meters use serum, as there is more dissolved glucose present here than anywhere else.

It has been proven that people with blood sugar problems often have health issues, whether slight or serious, and this is why it is extremely important to regularly check your glucose level by using a blood glucose meter. If a persons’ blood sugar drops dramatically and very low so that hypoglycemia appears, it can be fatal and so is very urgent that you contact a doctor or emergency physician. Some of the symptoms that either you will feel or you will notice in the sufferer will be tiredness, irritability, and loss of conscious, as well as impaired mental functioning.

On the other hand, if you test your own or somebody else’s blood sugar using a blood glucose meter and it is too high, yours or the person’s appetite will disappear and if they are a long term sufferer of hyperglycemia or high blood sugar level, they could suffer from diabetes, as well as nerve, eye and kidney damage in the long term. Often you will not have eaten anything for quite a few hours and might feel very tired, weak and dizzy and this is a result of low blood sugar, and the best remedy is to eat or drink something high in sugar and then eat a proper meal. This also often occurs after somebody has done a great deal of exercise, and they might even feel slightly nauseous, the best idea is to get them to drink a high energy sports drink and then later eat a nutritious meal.
